Videos for beginners – create links and maps

10th April 2010 by clare white

The following videos have been developed for use in Talk About Local training sessions. Although there are loads of brilliant how-to videos out there which we often use, we thought there was still a need for very simple videos that people could refer to as they got started on their hyperlocal sites. They take you through the development of my model site, Mythical City. Hopefully they are easy to follow with a bit of hands-on help if people get stuck.

It would be great to get your feedback on any ways these videos can be improved as you use them and any requests for further tutorials.

The full series is here, with code to share further.

Making links

At the last Tal Unconference, I was asked ‘how do I make a link’? This video has been made to answer that question. The small piece of code that you will want to keep a note of in case you find yourself in a comments box without a link wizard is this:
<a href=”http://www.talkaboutlocal.org.uk”>Talk About Local</a>
which will appear as this: Talk About Local.

Making maps

If you want to show problem spots, or even great spots, in your local area, maps are really useful. Google Maps can be used to create maps that lots of people can add information to. There are some more tips on things you can use maps here.
