Talk About Local work with Woodley residents to create a new community website for Stockport SK6

19th October 2011 by nickygetgood Leave a Comment

Last Thursday myself, William and Mike found ourselves delivering training in a room above a chip shop in Woodley Shopping Precinct, Stockport to a group of local residents. The training room is part of the unique Startpoint Woodley UK online centre, which is one of the many Community Capacity Builder centres Talk About Local are currently working with to help them use the web to connect their local communities. The centre is managed by Nicola Wallace Dean, who established Startpoint Woodley as a coffee shop and community hub to help rejuvenate what was a tired shopping precinct into the thriving square of independent shops it is now.

Nicola uses the space above her mother’s chip shop in the shopping precinct for IT training, which is where we worked with 9 local residents to help them create the new community website stockportsk6.wordpress.com. The team have wasted no time in publishing content on the site, posting up event notices and short video interviews with local people answering the brilliantly simple question: “Is Woodley still a village?“.

At the end of our training session I asked Nicola Wallace Dean and local resident and website contributor Jim a few questions on camera, the results of which you can see above. William also spoke to Nicola about her work to help revitalise the Woodley shopping precinct, which you can listen to here:
