About
Talk About Local is a project to give people in their communities a powerful online voice. We help people communicate and campaign more effectively using the web to influence events in the places in which they live, work or play. William Perrin talks here about how people have used the web to empower themselves in their communities.
A good, modern voice on the web can help communities communicate better, become more active and empowered. Community websites and forums make it easier for people to become involved in changing their area. The web can lower the barriers to finding basic information and make it easier to have your voice heard.
We are delighted with progress since the project started up in Summer 2009 – even though it usually takes months for a local site to find its feet, people we have helped in Kington, Herefordshire, West14, London, Heeley in Sheffield or rural Doddington in Cambridgeshire have produced great sites with real promise. Each site is very different in content, style and maturity and the team works to support the sites creators in different ways. Some sites were set up by people trained in uk online centres, others by uk online trainers, others by TAL running a local session. We shall feature more sites from talk about local as the sites mature. U Stream has video of William talking about local websites created by talk about local and Mike (in the same clip) talking about his own PitsnPots.
